I recently bought a Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 mother board to be used in what I wanted to be a multimedia center (among other things). Since I don’t have yet a HDMI-compatible concentrator, I was particularly interested for now into the S\/PDIF optical digital audio output that comes integrated to it. Unfortunately, after installing Linux Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS, even though analog sound was working, I was quite disgruntled to notice that no light would come out of the optical plug. The command \u00ab\u00a0aplay -l\u00a0\u00bb would list only two entries, namely something called \u00ab\u00a0Intel Generic\u00a0\u00bb and another one labeled \u00ab\u00a0Intel HDMI\u00a0\u00bb. So no \u00ab\u00a0Digital\u00a0\u00bb nor \u00ab\u00a0IEC958\u00a0\u00bb entry to select, which means the problem was either hardware-related (that is, there was a physical problem with the mobo) or, more likely, I didn’t have the appropriate driver for the mobo audio chipset, which is Realtek ALC892R.<\/p>\n
On the Gigabyte support web site, there was a note saying that for Linux one would have to seek drivers from the chipset vendor<\/a>. In that case, that would be Realtek. So I went to the Realtek web site<\/a> and found right away just what I was looking for in Downloads –> High Definition Audio Codecs –> UNIX (Linux)<\/a>.
